Shanghai's 'complete digital infrastructure' serves citizens well: officials

Shanghai has built complete digital infrastructure to better serve citizens, which includes faster broadband networks, intelligent urban management and health care systems and wide coverage 4G and Wi-Fi networks, city officials said today.

The city has built more than 100 5G trial base stations covering the regions of Xuhui Riverside and Hongqiao, making Shanghai a leading city in China in terms of 5G coverage.

By the end of the third quarter, Shanghai had more than 6.12 million fiber optic broadband users with average download speeds of 28 megabytes per second, 75 percent faster than 2017 speeds. The 4G user base reached 29.4 million, covering 85 percent of total mobile users in the city, according to the Shanghai Commission of Economy and Information Technology.

The city's IT infrastructure and technologies are used in urban management such as healthcare, transportation and food security, the commission said.

For example, more than 1,600 bus stops feature LCD screens with solar power, which display real-time bus schedules. Shanghai has established a food tracking system covering plantation, food processing, distribution and restaurant systems. It has more than 400 million lines of trackable food data covering 20 categories.

The city will hold a Smart City festival event from Thursday, displaying and introducing the latest technologies like AI, 5G and the Internet of Things.
