China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom, all announced 5G projects today, World Telecommunication Day.

China Telecom has established 5G trial networks covering venues used by the China International Import Expo, the World Artificial Intelligence Conference and the Mobile World Congress Shanghai, as well as Lingang Industrial Park and Lujiazui in the Pudong New Area.

The projects are among first batch of 5G network construction in Shanghai. China Telecom plans to cover the whole city with 5G by 2020.

China is expected to issue 5G licenses later this year.

Chen Jiezhong, of the Shanghai Communications Administration, said 5G not only offers consumers a better experience but directly boosts industry development and innovation.

The carriers said they would be inviting users to take part in a trial of 5G services.
