Shadow puppets take over Jing'an alleyways during annual festival
During the annual piyingxi (shadow puppetry) festival in Jing’an District this summer, performances of the traditional art were staged at Jing’an Park and in local alleyways.
Renowned troupes from Anhui and Zhejiang provinces performed popular stories like “Battle Between Monkey King and Bull Demon King” and “Turtle and Cranes.”
Performers stand behind a paper or cloth screen to tell stories by controlling puppets on wooden sticks.
Piyingxi originated in the royal court about 2,000 years ago, and was added to the UNESCO Cultural Heritage of Humanity list in 2011.
Shanghai Daily photographer Jiang Xiaowei captured the beauty of this classic art.
