Wu’s birds and flower masterpieces
A Chinese painting exhibition marking the 90th anniversary of the death of artist Wu Changshuo (1844-1927) is at Cheng Shifa Art Museum in Songjiang. The show will run to the end of January.
Around 40 masterpieces, donated by collector Mao Guolun are on display.
As a prominent painter, calligrapher and seal artist, Wu was the first to integrate seal carving and ink painting.
In his early years, he devoted himself to poetry and calligraphy with a strong interest in early scripts. He also led the Xiling Society of the Seal Art, an academic organization for Hangzhou-based seal artists. Only later did he consider himself a painter associated with the Shanghai School. As a painter, he was noted for helping to rejuvenate the art of painting flowers and birds.
Cheng Shifa (1921-2007), the calligrapher, painter and cartoonist was one of Wu’s students in Shanghai.
