Last chance to see antique art before it goes under hammer
A collection of antique and contemporary Chinese ink-wash paintings and calligraphy works will go under the hammer at Poly Auction House from December 6 to 9 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beijing.
Some of these masterpieces will be displayed at a preview today (for VIP only) and tomorrow at Art 021 at Shanghai Exhibition Center.
Aside from paintings, the auction will also include antiques, vintage books, jewelry and luxury watches.
One highlight is a piece called “Walking in Shuzhong” created by one of the masters of modern Chinese art, Fu Baoshi (1904-65) in 1944.
Fu depicted the real natural landscape of Jin’gang Slope where he and his family once lived during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1931-45)
Hailing from Xinyu, Jiangxi Province, Fu went to Japan to study the history of Oriental art at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1933. He then brought Japanese visual elements to Chinese ink-wash painting techniques. Fu was noted for creating an old, elegant style through his integration of poetic atmosphere and painting techniques.
Another highlight is the daunting work created by Pan Tianshou (1897-1971), also a heavyweight name in China’s modern art history. The painting “Limitless Scenery,” created in 1961, is considered as one of Pan’s representative works. It is also the biggest piece among private collectors for Pan’s paintings.
