Born in 1969 into a household full of music, Alban Gerhardt, who plays a Matteo Gofriller cello dating back to 1710, has made a profound impact on audiences worldwide with his intense musicality, compelling stage presence and insatiable artistic curiosity. 

Praised as “one of the finest cellists around — expressive, unshowy and infinitely classy” by “The Guardian,” Alban Gerhardt will soon visit Shanghai with his songful performance.

Born in 1969 into a household full of music, the German artist, who plays a Matteo Gofriller cello dating back to 1710, has made a profound impact on audiences worldwide with his intense musicality, compelling stage presence and insatiable artistic curiosity. 

Gerhardt’s international career was launched when he made his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1991. Notable collaborations since then include the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, the National Orchestra of France as well as Cleveland, Philadelphia and Chicago Orchestra, under conductors such as Kurt Masur, Christoph von Dohnányi and Esa-Pekka Salonen.

Passionate about sharing his discoveries and experiences with audiences, Gerhardt has undertaken various projects involving performances, workshops and pioneering sessions outside of traditional concert halls, such as schools, hospitals and young offender institutions. 

A highly acclaimed recording artist, the Classical cellist has won numerous awards and top prizes including Deutsche Musikwettbewerb, the ARD Competition, three ECHO Klassik Awards, and ICMA and MIDEM Classic Awards.

He will bring Bach’s “Suites for Solo Cello” to Shanghai for the local audience. In 2019, his complete recording of Bach suites will be released.
