The Glamorous Yueju Opera Cultural and Tourism Week has kicked off in Shengzhou, Zhejiang Province.

The key program of the week, which runs from March 25 till March 31, includes several performances by Shengzhou Yueju Opera Art School's graduates, including premiere of an original play by Xu Xian. Performances by local opera fans, staged in public squares, and a summit focusing on Chinese opera education is also planned.

The summit, also known as the fifth council meeting of the China Opera Education Alliance, is hosted by Shengzhou Yue Opera Art School this year and gathers presidents and experts from more than 60 universities and colleges home and abroad.

The Yueju opera fan performing competition, which began on March 1, has been attracting participants from Beijing, Shenzhen and Shengzhou, while the government-run Yueju opera fan site is now established in 41 cities connecting opera lovers around the country.

The first Yueju  opera performance to be staged was on March 27, 1906, in Dongwang Village in Shengzhou. In 2016, Shengzhou was conferred as a pilot area for protecting Yueju opera heritage and its related cultural ecology.
