Everyone's a critic, so give it your best shot
The International Awards for Art Criticism are open to candidates from all over the world.
The International Awards for Art Criticism are now in their sixth year. The annual event, launched in Shanghai in 2014, is open to candidates from all over the world.
Participants are invited to write a review of 1,500 words or 2,500 Chinese characters on any exhibition of contemporary art, anywhere in the world between September 15, 2018 and September 15, 2019.
There are no restrictions on age or professional background.
The jury comprises Paris-based Ami Barak, an independent curator and art critic; Juliana Engberg, curator, cultural events producer and writer; Bartomeu Marí, independent curator and writer on art; Shao Yiyang, professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts; and Anthony Yung, curator, writer and senior archival researcher at the Asia Art Archive, Hong Kong.
Submissions will be judged with strict anonymity, and the international jury will announce the shortlisted and winning candidates.
First prize includes 10,000 euros (US$11,268) and a short visit to Shanghai or London for an essay in Chinese or English and three equal second prizes of 3,500 euros for each art criticism essay.
Several events and seminars held by the IAAC have been held in Shanghai and London.
“Art appreciation is aimed at general audience and it can engage people into positive emotions,” said Gerard Hemsworth, contemporary artist and former professor of Fine Art and director of the MFA Fine Art Program at Goldsmith, University of London.
“The IAAC has become a gateway for new forces entering the art world,” said Gan Zhiyi, director of the Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum and joint chair of the IAAC Committee.
“It has supported the validation of intellectual values, academic guidance and new ideological forces.”
