Two group exhibitions “L’invisible vu” and “Your footsteps are the road, for there is no road” are ongoing at Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum through October 20.

Taking as the starting point a verse by the Spanish poet Antonio Machado (1875-1939), “Your footsteps are the road, for there is no road,” this project brings together works from 12 award-winning and nominated artists from Le Prix Marcel Duchamp (the Marcel Duchamp Prize), including Latifa Echakhch, Michel Blazy and Ulla von Brandenburg. Curated by Annabelle Ténèze, every exhibit has a road theme — the notion of displacement, travel and discovery.

“1395 Days without Red,” cinematographic project by Šejla Kamerić and Anri Sala in collaboration with Ari Benjamin Meyers

In “L’invisible vu,” Sylvain Amic showcases the paintings he has curated in the past. Joined by artists like Alfred Manessier, Hans Hartung and Nicolas de Stael, the exhibition focuses on the story behind their techniques and working styles. It looks at how certain artists dealt with the war and its immediate aftermath by turning to Existentialism and by cultivating pure expression as an affirmation of human existence.

The two events, with different connotations, share the same intention to ignite the audience to explore the unknown, contemplate the relationship between society and art through history, and figure out the evolution of art and its reinvention of tradition.
