The mime “Faust Without Words” will be staged at Majestic Theater on Sunday as part of the China Shanghai International Arts Festival.

Produced by Theaterzirkus Dresden, the play tells Goethe’s magnum opus through body language. The well-known legend is about Faust who is highly successful yet dissatisfied with his life. He makes a deal with devil, exchanging his soul for unlimited knowledge and pleasures.

In the original version, “Faust” is a tragedy. However, this mime will end in farce.

“Actually, the mime faced a big challenge in Germany at the very beginning because Goethe’s language is the highlight of the play but we just remove it,” said Tom Quaas, director of the show.

“However, the mime allows people who haven’t read the literature to have a better understanding of the story. Besides, the mime can be performed around the world without the language barrier.”
