The 5th Shanghai Huju Opera Art Festival closed with an innovative concert combination of Huju Opera and symphonic music at Bai Mansion on Sunday.

Song excerpts from “Thunderstorm,” “Sunrise,” “Dong Meiqing” and “Waterloo Bridge” were performed. Most of these plays feature nostalgic elements of Shanghai and exquisite qipao costumes.

The 10-day gala presented a total of 17 performances at local community centers and schools around the city. Huju Opera artists also held talks and workshops on the distinctive charms of the genre.

The Shanghai Huju Opera Troupe is also building a cultural inheritance center at Bai Mansion.

Valuable photos and video clips are displayed to provide insight into the origins and development of the regional opera genre. The center will open to the public next year.
