Shigeru Ban: Works and Humanitarian Activities
Highlights: Famous Japanese architect Shigeru Ban’s first solo architectural exhibition
One of the most famous architects from Japan, Shigeru Ban’s solo architectural exhibition titled “Works and Humanitarian Activities” will be launched at Power Station of Art from October 8, running till November 30.
In this exhibition, full-sized models and videos will be used to present Shigeru Ban’s six-year design and construction process from beginning to completion. It will gather more than 10 architects’ works as well as display his disaster relief projects across China and the world to highlights the architects’ attention to the relationship between humans and nature.
The first half of the exhibition will introduce disaster relief projects across the world. The presentation is realized by focusing on full-sizes models such as “Temporary Transition Resettlement Building in Kobe”, “Paper Partition System for Shelter Use”, “Nepal Restoration Project” and so on.
The second half of the exhibition will introduce projects in progress and some of his projects from China (“Bamboo Restaurant”, “Bamboo Furniture Home”). In the innermost exhibition space, the process of completing “La Seine Musicale” — a composite musical facility in the suburbs of Paris which opened in the spring of 2017 — will be demonstrated.

Announcement of 2017 HUGO BOSS ASIA ART Finalist Artists
Highlights: A group exhibition of 2017 HUGO BOSS ASIA ART Award
A group exhibition showcasing works of the four artists who were finalists in the Hugo Boss Asia Art competition (Chinese artists Li Ming, Tao Hui, and Yu Ji, and Singaporean artist Robert Zhao) will be shown at Rockbund Art Museum from October 27. This exhibition will present newly commissioned works as well as existing works by the finalists.
Since its establishment in 2013, the HUGO BOSS ASIA ART Award has become a well-respected contemporary art competition in Asia. It continuously reflects on current topics and explores the future of art in Greater China and Southeast Asia.
The biannual award contributes towards artistic and cultural exchanges in the broader historical and social contexts of Greater China and Southeast Asia, giving voice to emerging artists in the field of contemporary art in this region while simultaneously bridging boundaries so as to encourage inter-cultural communication.

The Extraordinary Melodies from the Blue Danube
Highlights: Foremost boys’ choral group Vienna Boys Choir will come to Shanghai
The Vienna Boys Choir, with more than 500 years’ history, which has been recognized as the foremost boys’ choral group in the world, will give their moving concert at Shanghai Oriental Art Center next month.
In this concert, the choir will present a number of classical and European folk music works in order to commemorate the 150th anniversary of The Blue Danube’s premiere, such as O Fortuna from Carl Orff, Welcome, Spring from Debussy, as well as Bulgarian folk song Beautiful Dilmana and The Blue Danube from Strauss.
Along with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the choir was named the two great national treasures of Austria. Since the 14th century, the boys sang in weekly Sunday masses in the Imperial Chapel of the Hofburg Palace in Vienna, a tradition that continues to this day. Over the centuries, the Viennese Court attracted great musicians like Mozart, Haydn and Schubert who were themselves choir boys. In Vienna, it is the proudest childhood achievement for boys to become members of Vienna Boys Choir.

Zhang Zhongli Pan flute Recital
Highlights: Taiwanese musician Zhang Zhongli ’s wonderful Pan flute recital
Pan flute player Zhang Zhongli from Taiwan will perform with Shanghai Baroque Chamber Orchestra at Shanghai Concert Hall on October 4.
Born in Taiwan, Zhang Zhongli started to learn pan flute at 11 years of age. He has won awards at many national music competitions and has cooperated with German musician Ulrich Herkenhoff and other famous orchestras.
Led by music director Meimei Wei, Shanghai Baroque Chamber Orchestra is made up of outstanding professional musicians, including foreign musicians from major orchestras and conservatories in China and abroad. Their mission is to present a wide variety of exciting chamber music to locals.

Cloud Gate Dance Theater of Taiwan: Rice
Highlights: Dance theater “Rice” with the theme of life.
Lin Hwai-min, together with his Cloud Gate Dance Theater from Taiwan, will present dance show “Rice” at Shanghai Oriental Art Center from October 18 to 21.
It is a work based on the choreographers’ personal experiences in farming and harvesting. With the movement of their bodies, the dancers will recreate the growth of rice and showcase the powerful cycle of life.

Highlights: Famous opera “Carmen” hits Shanghai
Famous opera “Carmen”, composed by French composer Georges Bizet, will hit the stage at Shanghai Oriental Art Center next month.
The performance will be presented by Spain’s Antonio Andrade Flamenco Company. Andrade combines the elements of love, passion, pride and death for this production. The dynamic art form of flamenco has given a brand-new interpretation to the tragic love story of the independent and seductive woman, Carmen, who was killed by her lover.
Over the past few years, the flamenco version of “Carmen” has toured many countries and regions, including Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States.

The comedy drama “Semianyki: the Family”
Highlights: Popular comedy drama “Semianyki: the Family” will bring warmth to Shanghai audiences
The comedy drama “Semianyki: the Family” — hailed by audiences and critics alike — blends various ingredients from Europe, such as English burlesque and French mime. Now, it is coming to Shanghai.
The show vividly depicts the joy, craziness and survival strategies of a family, which includes a pregnant yet flirtatious mom, a caring yet alcoholic dad and their four tender yet unruly kids.
Hilarious and heart-warming scenes of love and chaos explore the essence and charm of the family. The show was developed from a sketch performed for Russia’s theater and Mime school in 2003. Two years later it was hailed at the famous Festival of Avignon, and then the show embarked on the French and international touring circuit.

Russian State Ballet: The Nutcracker

The two-act ballet is a fantastic show for the whole family. Based on a fairy tale by ETA Hoffmann, the show will lead audiences on a journey through a fantasy world where a girl meets a prince. Spectacular scenes, stirring music and modern elements will also be incorporated into this classic tale.
