"Old Friends," the country's first variety show about elderly people's lives, recorded a special gala last night in Shanghai to celebrate the coming New Year.

The 90-minute gala featured Peking Opera singer Shang Changrong, famous dancer Huang Doudou, tenor Wei Song and actress Zhang Kaili performing and interacting with the local audience. The gala also held a heartwarming wedding ceremony for four elderly couples.

The show's veteran host Ye Huixian, 71, is also the chief planner. Ye, who recently received a Special Contribution Award from the Shanghai Media Group, shared with audiences his affinity with the program as well as many behind-the-scenes stories.

Launched in 2005, the show has offered elderly people a platform to display their talents and make new friends.

This special New Year episode starts on Dragon TV at 5pm on December 30.
