6-hour music gala goes on air on New Year's Eve
The Art Channel of Shanghai Media Group will broadcast three symphonic concerts on New Year's Eve in a six-hour musical gala that will feature performances from top-notch ensembles from home and abroad.
The first concert, the Shanghai New Year's Concert 2018, will be broadcast live on the channel from 8pm, featuring artists from Shanghai Symphony Orchestra who will perform classic scores by Antonin Dvorak, Gustav Mahler and Johann Strauss II. Local mezzo-soprano Zhu Huiling will sing arias by the Strauss family.
Next up will be the New Year's concert by Shanghai Conservatory of Music which will begin at 10pm. The concert will feature performances by violinist Huang Mengla, pianist Sun Yingdi and erhu (two-stringed bowed musical instrument) performer Lu Yiwen.
The gala will reach its climax around 12am when the third part, a live broadcast of Berlin Philharmonic's New Year's Eve Gala Concert, will begin. Conducted by Simon Rattle, the concert will feature American Grammy Award-winning mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato who sings the classics of Richard Georg Strauss. Scores from Igor Stravinsky's dance drama "Apollo" and Shostakovich's dance drama "The Age of Gold" will also be performed at the Berlin concert.
