Celebrated director Zhang Yimou brought his original concept theater show “2047 Apologue” to Shanghai last night.

The show, which will also be presented tonight at Shanghai Grand Theater, will tour in Hangzhou and Guangzhou after the Shanghai stop.

The spectacular show is Zhang’s attempt to explore humanity and the essence of science and technology. The show’s debut in Beijing last year was a huge success.

Zhang combines Chinese folk culture with avant-garde 3D holographic technology in this visually stunning show.

Twenty performing teams presented impressive acts of traditional martial arts, Peking Opera, folk dance, music and puppetry.

Zhang said he is preparing for the show’s second season, which will showcase more brilliant traditional arts and the latest technical achievements. The new season will go on to explore the futuristic relationship between people and technology.

“Stage art is showing more diverse styles and genres in China,” said Zhang. “Technology will be incorporated more and more into performance art.”
