Zhang Jun was honored a UNESCO Artist for Peace in 2011.

Kunqu Opera “prince” Zhang Jun will present an innovative concert titled “Kunplug” for around 10,000 people on May 18.

The concert, to be held at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, will fuse new age, jazz, electronic and rock ’n’ roll with traditional Kunqu Opera scores. It will also feature stunning visual effects.

Zhang said that such diverse musical elements will better express the emotions and feelings of today’s youth.

This will help the age-old, elegant opera to become more accessible to young people, who will be encouraged to sing Kunqu episodes with him, Zhang added.

Over the years, Zhang has spared no effort in the preservation and revival of the 600-year-old art form.

Among his efforts were a real garden version of the Kunqu Opera classic “The Peony Pavilion” at the watertown Zhujiajiao in suburban Qingpu District, the original Kunqu Opera play “Blossoms on a Spring Moonlit Night” and a Kunqu adaptation of “Hamlet.”

In 2011, Zhang was honored a UNESCO Artist for Peace.
