Huangpu Theater brings the world to Shanghai

From "The Magic Flute" to "The Nutcracker" and the Bolshoi Ballet, Huangpu Theater's new program promises a feast of drama, ballet and opera in HD.

Ten world-famous productions are coming in HD to the big screen at the Huangpu Theater from May 5.

Produced by UK’s National Theatre, the Royal Opera House and the Bolshoi Theatre, the newly released program includes drama, ballet and opera in 26 screenings.

The upcoming operas include the Royal Opera House’s latest production of Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte” (The Magic Flute) and Verdi’s final tragedy “Otello” performed by world-renowned tenor Jonas Kaufmann and conducted by Antonio Pappano.

“The Nutcracker” performed by the Royal Ballet will get the audiences into the Christmas spirit in the middle of the year. With sophisticated choreography and eye-catching costumes, Christopher Wheeldon’s ballet “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” will be screened along with “Romeo and Juliet” and “The Lady of the Camellias,” performed by the Bolshoi Ballet.

An array of phenomenal plays produced by the National Theatre is a highlight. Nominated for 10 Laurence Olivier Awards and winning two for musical revival and costume design, “Follies” features the reunion of former Follies girls on the day before the Weismann Theater was demolished.

It starred four-time Olivier laureate Imelda Staunton as Sally, Olivier and Critics’ Circle winner Janie Dee as Phyllis and two-time Olivier winner Tracie Bennett as Carlotta Campion.

The Shakespeare masterpiece “Hamlet” with Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role, who is known as “Curly Fu” in China for his floppy hairstyle in the popular TV series “Sherlock,” will be broadcast in Shanghai during the summer vacation along with the comedy play “One Man, Two Guvnors.”
