Forum on theater directing kicks off in Shanghai

The International Symposium on Contemporary Theater Directing and Theater Director Education opened on June 16.

The symposium held by Shanghai Theater Academy will run till June 18. About 130 professionals from 10 countries of the world gathered and exchanged their views on the development of contemporary theater directing and the nurture of young theater directors. 

During the event, an experimental Peking Opera based on the tragedy of Oedipus will be staged at Shanghai Theater Academy on the evenings of June 16 and 17. It’s a new joint effort of the academy and Zhejiang Province Peking Opera Troupe to combine traditional Chinese art form with Western theater.

According to Huang Changyong, president of Shanghai Theater Academy, ever since 2009, the directing department of the Shanghai Theater Academy has successfully held 10 editions of international master classes on directing. It has offered directors from all over the world a platform to discuss the achievements and new trends of theater art.
