Turning urban space into a playground, the innovative German theater group Rimini Protokoll will present Remote Shanghai, a new live art experience in October and November.

“Audiences” of 50 wearing headphones will set off into the city, guided by an artificial intelligence voice, in English and Chinese.

Starting at the Longhua Martyr’s Memorial Hall, the audiovisual journey will explore downtown spots, including a hospital, a religious site and a shopping mall.

These places might be familiar to the audience, but, accompanied by the cinematic soundtrack and the guidance of a computer-generated voice, it will be a new way to look at the city.

The experience makes the audience members actors in their own show as the AI voice gives instructions, such as pondering the people around them or performing certain actions.

They need to make individual decisions and yet remain part of a group.

Humans and technology; free choice and obedience are part of the performance experience.

Remote Shanghai is part of the program Remote X produced by Rimini Protokoll.

Created in 2002, the team consists of three artists: Helgard Haug, Stefan Kaegi and Daniel Wetzel.

They are considered by many as the inventors of a new wave of documentary theater.

Bringing real life to the stage is what Rimini Protokoll insists on.

Instead of professional actors, their works are performed by people from all walks of life.

The team was invited by the German Pavilion in the 2010 World Expo Shanghai.

The critically acclaimed Remote X has been carried out in several cities around the world, including Moscow, New York, Milan and the Indian city of Bengaluru, formerly known as Bangalore.
