Drama's 60th birthday is everyone's cup of tea
Classic drama “Teahouse,” a 1957 play by Lao She, will be presented in a special Sichuan dialect version to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the drama’s debut.
The drama’s national tour is organized by Mailive and Sichuan People’s Art Theater. Sixteen shows will be performed in seven cities in the following two months.
The show will be staged in Shanghai from November 20 to 22, as a program of the 20th China Shanghai International Arts Festival.
Created by Lao She in 1956, the play set in a teahouse depicts about 50 various characters of society, social turmoil and the changes of people’s lives.
The Teahouse also witnesses the last five years of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the warlord’s separatist period and the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, reflecting the changes of society.
A distinctive flavor of Sichuan culture and customs are incorporated into the new version of the play.
According to director Li Liuyi, a classic drama is time-honored and thought-provoking. It has the power to appeal to people across the different eras.
