Unforgettable, that's what they are...
Il Divo, a male cross-over quartet from the United Kingdom with a signature “popera” style, will hit Shanghai Oriental Art Center on Wednesday.
They will present a variety of works popular worldwide such as talent show standard “I Will Always Love You” initially made famous by Whitney Houston in the movie “The Bodyguard,” pop hit “Angels,” jazz classic “Unforgettable,” and an aria from “The Magic Flute.”
The idea for Il Divo came from British music producer Simon Cowell after listening to a concert by the Three Tenors.
He decided to form a multinational quartet of talented young singers to recreate the sound of Pavarotti, Carreras and Domingo. After nearly three years of searching, he put together American tenor David Miller, Spanish baritone Carlos Marin, Swiss tenor Urs Buhler and French pop singer Sebastien Izambard as Il Divo in 2004. The name means “divine performer” in Italian.
The four young men together created their signature “popera” style that combines pop and opera singing, with themes taken from genres including Latin, folk, ballads, church music, bolero and pop.
The quartet was awarded “Artist of the Decade” at the Classic Brit Awards in 2011, in recognition of the massive impact that they had on the classical genre.
Il Divo sold over 25 million albums worldwide from 2004-2011.
