Top shows lined up at renovated City Theater
The two-month performance season at the newly renovated Shanghai City Theater is to feature the classical ballet “Swan Lake,” drama production “Model Prison,” as well as an original dance drama “Wild Zebra.”
The Shanghai Ballet’s traditional production of “Swan Lake” is distinguished by the exquisite use of a huge corps de ballet of angelic dancers.
The Shanghai Dance Theater’s dance epic “Wild Zebra” is a fable about love, sacrifice and peace.
“Model Prison” is the first drama production of Chinese historian and writer Yi Zhongtian. It is a sarcastic story that explores human nature and complicated humanity.
According to Fang Yongnian, general manager of Shanghai City Theater, the venue, boasting advanced stage lighting and sound systems after renovation, will be an official venue for the China Art Festival in future.
The theater, which now has 1,100 seats, will also be developed into a “smart theater” with a paper-free ticketing system.
Next year, more than 200 commercial performances will be staged. Public-interest art salons, lectures and training camps will be held to promote chamber music, traditional Chinese operas and other theatrical arts.
“We’ll also host events of art education which cater to families, with interactive apps and extensive kids programs,” says Fang.
