Six Chinese musicals will be staged at the SAIC Shanghai Culture Square in March and April during the Original Chinese Musical Season.

The Shanghai Culture Square has presented about 30 original musicals since the launch of the Original Chinese Musical Season in 2012, with an aim to provide a platform for original Chinese musicals with some potential.

“We have witnessed more original creations in the past few years, which is definitely good news for the market,” said Fei Yuanhong, vice general manager of the venue.

“We hope that our persistence in organizing the Original Chinese Musical Season can offer effective support in this field, and thus expand the platform for more musical participants.”

The six new creations selected this year include “The Search of Sound” which deals with children’s issues. “My Farewell Lady” and “Liao Zhai Rocks!” are recreations of well-known Chinese classic fictions.

“Long Johns and Rolling Pin” explores relationships between a mother and daughter; “I Love You” plays around with AI technology, while is “Art School Musical,” directed by Edward Lam, is a thought provoking reflection about love and art.

‘The Search of Sound’

Musical “The Search of Sound” is based on a 2013 Chinese movie of the same name which was taken to the 64th Berlin International Film Festival. It centers on a boy moving to a city from his carefree life in the countryside. He has a bottle for collecting magic sound, with which he makes new friends. Except for the 35 songs with lyrics and some basic dance guidelines, performers are free to improvise spontaneously on the stage.
