February is almost here. And with the Chinese New Year around the corner, there are still a number of activities for us to enjoy. As usual, we have prepared a monthly guide that includes a weird museum tour, exhibition and drama performances with the latest from the eateries. Joan Zheng and Zoe Chen share their picks.

Check out the ‘Museum of Failure’

An Intellectual Property exhibition, “Museum of Failure,” is currently ongoing at no. 1 Shopping Center and will end on March 17.

Curated by psychologist Dr Samuel West, the exhibition has toured America and Europe, winning high praises from visitors and critics alike.

“Museum of Failure” is exhibiting a number of failed products from all over the world, including products and projects from Apple, Google, Microsoft, Coca Cola and other famous companies.

The exhibit provides visitors a valuable learning experience and a new insight about business and life through a series of failed innovation projects.

Tokyo museum brings Western masterpieces

Sixty Western paintings, all part of Tokyo Fuji Art Museum’s collection, are being displayed at Powerlong Museum. The exhibition is on until April 30.

It features not only Western paintings from the past 500 years, but also a colorful Western art history that highlights some renowned artists’ pursuit of Western art.

The exhibition is displayed in a chronological order. The exhibit includes works of masters like Giorgio Morandi, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso,and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.Not to be missed.

Lisa Ono promises a Valentine’s Day to remember

Japanese singer Lisa Ono will perform at Shanghai Jing’an Sports Center on Valentine’s Day.

She is the only Asian singer who can perform Bossa nova music in multiple languages.Ono combines Brazilian samba with American West Coast cool jazz and French music. Her voice is light, delicate and comfortable, giving her audience a feel of a lazy afternoon in an old cafe. Her childlike voice has attracted lots of Chinese fans. 

At the Chinese concert, she will perform works from her 30-year musical journey and warm you in the cold winter days.

Botti to kick off China tour in Shanghai 

American trumpeter and composer Chris Botti will kick-start his Chinese tour at Shanghai Oriental Art Center on February 27.

A Grammy-winning performer, Botti can easily switch between jazz, pop and rock and roll. His album “When I Fall in Love” has been appreciated worldwide since its release in 2004.

With a unique performing style, the versatile musician has cooperated with renowned musicians including big names like Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell and Gordon Sumner.

Mozart musical coming to rock the fans in Shanghai

The French musical “Rock Mozart” that deals with the musician’s life will be staged at SAIC Shanghai Culture Square next month.

Combining original rock music with Mozart’s classical works, “Rock Mozart” will blow away fans of music. It blends bold rock music, baroque-style costumes, modern artistic expression and gorgeous European courts-like stage into one musical.

The musical starts with Mozart’s youth and deals with the opportunities, allure, jealousy and obstacles he encountered during his pursuit of musical dream.

Flamenco artists bring alive Bizet’s classic ‘Carmen’

Adapted from French composer Georges Bizet’s well-known opera “Carmen,” this version in classical flamenco dance will be performed at Shanghai Grand Theater on February 2.

Directed by Javier Ladore, a national-level choreographer, and performed by Spanish prince of flamenco Javier Martos, the newest version of “Carmen” is presented by Granada Flamenco Dance Troupe, one of the three top flamenco dance troupes in Spain.

The performers inject new life into the story. Their performance interprets the unruly enthusiasm and mysterious grief of the gypsy people.

Award-winning ‘School of Rock’ to perform here

The Tony Award-winning musical“School of Rock” is scheduled to perform in Shanghai next month.

The musical is composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, whose previous works were runaway hits like “Cats” and “The Phantom of the Opera.” “School of Rock” is written by Julian Fellowes, who wrote Downton Abbey, and directed by Laurence Connor, whose credits include “Les Miserables” and “Miss Saigon.”

“School of Rock” is adapted from the novel of the same name. The story is about a teacher who dreams to be a rock star. He decides to train his pupils into a rock band while teaching in a private school.

The musical features interesting plots and unique insights on parent-child relationship. A group of children will offer marvelous performance in this show. It is a show deserving your attention.
