Sixty foreign students from 27 countries and regions attended a special Kunqu Opera performance to celebrate the Lantern Festival in Shanghai yesterday.

Shanghai People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and Shanghai Kunqu Opera Company hosted the event to promote traditional Chinese culture.

The students in attendance study at Shanghai Normal University, Shanghai International Studies University, Shanghai University of Electric Power and Shanghai University of Sport.

For most of them, it was a first-time experience of witnessing traditional Chinese theater. Classic excerpts from “The Peony Pavilion,” “Romance of the Western Chamber” and “The Drunken Concubine” were staged.

Performers also invited students to dress up like the plays’ characters and learn basic dance moves and age-old theater artistic postures.

Chinese Lantern Festival customs were also introduced so the students could better understand Chinese culture.
