The State Small Theater of Vilnius will present local theater lovers the comedy “The Government Inspector.” Directed by Rimas Tuminas, it is regarded as one of the best comedies ever staged by the Lithuanian theater.

The play is adapted from Nikolai Gogol’s novel, which depicts the turmoil in a little provincial town, drowning in sins and vices. It is traditionally considered to be the first realist Russian satire. However, director Tuminas avoids any preaching from the stage.

When staging the play, he was completely ignorant of the social, political or religious context. He endeavors to speak about the humanity of the play and to show the human purification that forms the main plotline of the play.

The story centers on a young playboy Chlestakov passing through a small town, who is mistaken for a government inspector.

It is also abundant with unique, preciously sculpted minor roles performed with ease and passion. Director Tuminas has tried to make sure audience experiences pleasure in every detail, gesture and intonation.

According to actor Arunas Sakalauskas, few directors could read this classic work in such a way.

“There is no negative character left in the play,” said Sakalauskas. “Obviously, even an ordinary bribetaker, a card player or a gossip also has dreams, and would be happy to make a change in his life. Dreams about better and fairer lives make the performance sound like strings through the mist.”
