Piano play returns for encore
The award-winning play “The Piano in a Factory” returns to the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center after its first tour seven years ago. It runs through September 8.
Set in the 1990s, the comedy tells a story of a middle-aged man named Chen Guilin, who is a laid-off worker. Betrayed by his wife, he works very hard to realize his daughter’s desire to own a piano. Borrowing money and even attempting to steal a piano, Chen tries his best but fails. Finally, he decides to build a steel piano with his friends.
Although he encounters many challenges, Chen remains optimistic.
The play is adapted from a popular movie of the same name.
“The play reveals the essence of life, suffering while enjoying,” said playwright Yu Rongjun. “While the film version focused on the father-daughter relationship, the drama pays attention to the remembrance of an era and a group of people — workers. It features the tricks of life and people’s self-mockery.”
The original cast presents the play, starring Guo Xiaodong, who takes the role of the father.
“I hope that audiences can see the loveliness of Chinese men — kind, having strong self-esteem, valuing brotherhood and family relationships,” said Zhou Xiaoqian, the play's director.
An old chimney, shabby staircase and other stage settings immerse audiences in the industrial atmosphere of the early 1990s.
