“The Untold Story of 221,” a documentary series about the history of China’s research and development of atom and hydrogen weapons, will start to air on Dragon TV and Shanghai Media Group's Documentary Channel on Friday.

The three-episode series is co-produced by SMG’s documentary center and Qinghai Province's radio and TV bureau. It focuses on China’s nuclear base, known as 221, and records the story of the country’s nuclear armaments.

The series is also a tribute to the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

It took filmmakers about one year to produce the documentary. They interviewed more than 30 scientists and engineers who used to work at the 221 base.

The series is meant to inspire young people with its insights into China's successful development of atom and hydrogen bombs during times of difficulty.
