Oscar-winning filmmaker Ang Lee's action film "Gemini Man" premiered Monday night in Shanghai.

Nearly 1,000 film fans packed Shanghai Film Art Center, where Lee's 2016 film "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk" also premiered on the Chinese mainland, to have a firsthand experience of the film's 3D, 4K and 120fps technologies.

Directed by Lee, the VFX-heavy film starring Will Smith follows Henry Brogan, an aging government assassin, who is suddenly targeted and pursued by a mysterious young operative that seemingly can predict his every move.

Ang Lee won the Oscar for best director twice, in 2013 for "Life of Pi" and in 2006 for "Brokeback Mountain." The martial arts film "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" directed by Lee won the best foreign-language film Oscar in 2001.

"Gemini Man" is produced by Skydance and distributed by Paramount Pictures. China's Fosun Pictures and Alibaba Pictures are the co-financiers of the film. It is scheduled for public release on the Chinese mainland Friday.
