Youku unveils new drama, variety programs

Streaming website Youku has unveiled dozens of new series and variety shows during an event in Shanghai.

According to Dai Wei, vice president of Alibaba Group, they will provide high-quality content as well as interactive ways to give viewers an immersive experience.

They will produce “Asia Super Young,” a talent competition gathering pop star wannabes. The show will be China’s first variety that is simultaneously broadcast overseas.

They will also produce a male version of the hit show “Sisters Who Make Waves.” Middle-aged male performing artists will appear on the show to showcase their talents.

Veteran producer Hou Hongliang will collaborate with Youku on “Challenges at Midlife.” The drama will star Lei Jiayin and Yuan Quan.

Director Zheng Xiaolong will helm “The Story of Xing Fu,” about the growth of a village girl. Actress Zhao Liying will play the leading role.

Yu Zheng will produce the historical drama “Song of Youth.” The show set in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) tells the story of a legendary businesswoman.

Actresses Song Jia and Liu Mintao will star in the urban suspense series “Goodbye My Love,” about a seemingly happy woman who is surrounded by lies and dangers.
