Shanghai Oriental Art Center’s original production drama “Garden of the Jins” returns to the metropolis stage this weekend.

The play follows the lifelong friendship of two Shanghai women ­— mistress Jin Wanying and her housemaid Lu Shuijuan. The plot begins in 1958 and stretches over 52 years, set against a seismic backdrop of historical events in the city.

The four-act play received good reviews, when it premiered in the city last September. Critics and audiences were overwhelmed by the two leading characters, who personified the spirit, elegance and joie de vivre ladies from Shanghai are well known for throughout the world.

Writer Hong Jinghui, who teaches at Shanghai Theater Academy, said the script covers all of her childhood memories in a typical neighborhood of small lanes in the city’s Jing’an District.

“Garden of the Jins” is a recommendation of the ongoing 2020 Pudong Festival of Art and Culture.

After the two performances in Shanghai, the play will embark on its maiden national tour, visiting 11 cities in the Yangtze River Delta region, including Hangzhou, Suzhou, Nanjing, Wuxi, Changzhou and Lianyungang.

Shanghai Oriental Art Center has also developed by-products like brooches and key chains for the play, featuring signature Shanghai cultural elements like qipao and vintage enamel cups.
