Scooter-driving Mexican spreads comedy in China

Mexican stand-up comedian co-founded the Shanghai Comedy Club and hopes to encourage more Chinese comics to take to the stage.

Barney Rivera, from Mexico and California, has been living in Shanghai for about four-and-a-half years. He started doing comedy eight years ago and is a co-founder of the Shanghai Comedy Club.

The 36-year-old gets some of his inspiration sometimes simply from his daily routine of riding his scooter around the chaotic but colorful streets of Shanghai — a city with a population about the same as the entire continent of Australia.

Rivera hopes to inspire and promote local talent, both in Mandarin and English. Wherever you look, you can always find a laugh.
