A little over a year ago, Brut Cake Cafe made its debut on the quaint Yuyuan Road. And the neighborhood cafe quickly added its name to the city’s brunch scene with the signature chicken and waffle, as well as a fusion style cuisine that was both innovative and delicious at the same time.

Brut Cake Cafe is operated by food blogger Priscilla Young and her chef husband Jun Wu, who is very adept at connecting Western and Chinese dining concepts.

The spicy Granny Manwich (72 yuan/US$11.4) is a must-try staple at the Brut Cake Cafe, which stuffs beef patty, cheese, salad and laoganma spicy chili sauce in between two pieces of whole wheat mantou, or steamed bun. The manwich has a dense texture compared to a classic burger or a sandwich but the bun, with a light taste, pairs really well with the juicy beef. There are also non-spicy manwiches on the menu for people who cannot handle the heat.

The chicken and waffle (82 yuan) is a big plate of pure happiness. The fluffy hot waffle is topped with big chunks of sizzling fried chicken and caramelized walnuts, a very playful combo of textures and sweet plus savory flavors. Its immense popularity now means this brunch classic is served every day.

If you are looking for healthy and fulfilling options, try the three mixed grains rice bowls.

A crowd favorite is The Express (68 yuan), which is a stew of beef flank, potato and spicy shrimp paste with pickled beetroot.

As for the dessert, the honey cake (25 yuan) and black pepper brownie (28 yuan) are great options as they are not quite so sweet. The brand now has a second establishment on Zhaojiabang Road, which has a much larger space than the first store and alcoholic beverages that includes craft beer and wines.

There are five new meaty dishes, including duck, fish, lamb, pork and beef and they are wonderful creations to pair with beer or wine.

The organic pork rib with strawberry kimchi kale salad and fries (138 yuan), as well as lamb loin served with black garlic yogurt (128 yuan), continues the cafe’s quest in blending delicious elements from different cuisines.

You can also opt for more casual appetizer dishes like hummus duo (48 yuan), crispy brussels sprouts (32 yuan) and hot pot fries (30 yuan), which replaces ketchup with the secret hot pot sauce.

As a sister concept to the furniture brand of the same name, Brut Cake Cafe also sells the furniture and tableware customers see and use in store. The cups with 100 smiling faces are adorable gifts for friends and family.

The cafe is also pet-friendly and diners can bring their dogs to sit outside while enjoying good food and drinks.
