Canteen Road is the type of everyday dining spot for both lunches and dinners for those who prefer authentic, decent, no-fuss Cantonese specialties right in the center of the city, inside the Kerry Center on Nanjing Road W.

During lunch time, well-dressed people from nearby office buildings line up for some simple noodles with a milk tea and after work, a group of friends settle into one of the cozy seating booths and treat themselves to traditional delicacies and a decent selection of well-made BBQ or seafood.

The interior was recently upgraded with a fresh blue and white color theme, giving off a clean yet warm vibe for quality dining that you can enjoy every day. The team is dedicated to creating a sense of “place” for anyone, anytime.

The dishes are well executed by a newly appointed chef from Guangdong Province who has more than 20 years of cooking experiences in top restaurants and hotels. Classic homey Cantonese dishes are given a refined, light twist while maintaining maximum flavor. The dishes are authentic, taste mild and fresh, and the menu gives a range of choices at good prices.

Sliced fish in fresh lemon soup

Cantonese food lovers can delight in the all-time crowd pleasers such as the Cantonese BBQ selection including soy sauce chicken, roasted meat, boneless Hainan chicken and other Hong Kong-style dishes.

I tried one of my favorite home-style Cantonese recipes — steamed meatloaf with salted fish and water chestnut (66 yuan). The meat was sweet and tender, interspersed with crunch from bits of water chestnut and high-quality salted fish that imparted a heady fishy pungence and an intense dose of saltiness to the minced pork that not all might find appealing. I really enjoyed this typical Cantonese dish that is a perfect pairing with rice and less-tasty noodles.

For those who prefer seafood dishes, opt for wok-fried fish head with ginger and shallots (78 yuan), stir-fried scallops and shrimps with celery, cashew nuts (88 yuan) and wok-fried razor clam with ginger and shallots (78 yuan).

Besides the many choices of meat, seafood and vegetables, there is a wide selection of noodles, rice and congee according to different preferences. I tried the noodle with sliced pork liver, ginger and shallot. Made with a fragrant broth, it was delicious, clean and soothing.
