Wine connoisseur making whistle-stop tour to lead a two-day master class
in Monferrato, the grapes have been adapted for centuries for this specific terroir with very specific micro-climate.
Ian D’Agata, world famous Italian wine expert and founder of Indigena, a project aimed at showcasing wines made with native grapes from specific Italian wine regions all around the world, is in Shanghai to lead a two-day master class with Grapea & Co wine school, at Shanghailander Wine Cafe on July 30 and 31.
With support from the Barbera d’Asti and Monferrato Wine Consortium and the Asti DOCG Consortium, D’Agata will educate wine lovers, with Grapea & Co’s education director, He Lingzi (a well-recognized Italian wine expert in China), on how to appreciate the varieties of indigenous grapes from the Asti and Monferrato areas, in Piedmont, that make wines linked with the terroir so unique.

Six masterclasses will take place during the two-day event and 48 wineries of great personality have been selected from wine regions, including Barbera d’Asti, Nizza, Ruche di Castagnole Monferrato and Asti. This will give an in-depth understanding of the lesser-known varieties to the local market such as the autochthonous grape Barbera and Ruché.
“Monferrato is the home of Barbera, one of the five most cultivated varieties in Italy. It’s not a one-grape area. It also has another eight red grape varieties and a couple of white varieties to this specific land, producing unique wines that are not available anywhere else in Italy or the world. The grapes have been adapted over centuries for this specific terroir with a very specific micro-climate,” D’Agata said.
Ruche is cultivated on a total of 150 hectares of vineyards nowadays in Monferrato.
