Shanghai is a city that loves a brunch, and if you are making plans for a weekend get-together with friends, Jazz at Lincoln Center Shanghai is worth checking out.

The venue was jointly developed by Shanghai Bund Investment Group and Jazz at Lincoln Center, with the aim of bringing top American jazz musicians to the historic Bund area.

Food and beverage is served by the Light & Salt team, featuring an American casual menu that fits the jazz theme. The brunch bill offered a decent selection of egg dishes, seafood, pizza, pasta, salad and desserts and every Sunday, guests can enjoy live music while eating.

A starter best suited for the summer weather is tomato avocado salad with shallots, white wine vinegar and lime sorbet (88 yuan). The avocado has an ice cream consistency and coolness, which works well with the sweet fresh tomatoes.

The hot fried chicken with spicy glaze (98 yuan for half chicken) is the menu’s star pick. The American southern classic staple is cooked with crisp skin and juicy meat, and the special spicy sauce on the side has the right amount of heat that doesn’t overpower the chicken flavor.

If you want to sample a little bit of everything, there are two sharing-style breakfast platters available. The swing breakfast plate (298 yuan) is a classic option featuring grilled Australian sirloin, bacon, cheese sausage, spinach and mushroom benedict and green salad, while the surf and turf breakfast platter (498 yuan) upgrades the game with half grilled lobster, grilled steak, one fried soft-shell crab, salmon Benedict, squid sausage and bacon. Their squid sausage is particularly charming.

The roasted duck tortilla with pickled cucumber, leak and coriander (88 yuan) and truffle capellini with wild mushroom and celery root puree (98 yuan) are popular staple dishes. For dessert, the mango trifle with coconut custard and lime is a fresh, seasonal choice that’s light and not so sweet, while the choux a la crème with hazelnut praline and Guanaja, 70 percent dark chocolate, brings more full-bodied flavors.

Etienne Charles, who’s hailed by JazzTimes as a “daring improviser who delivers with heart-wrenching lyricism,” performs with Melanie Charles at the center from July 31 to August 19.
