Sober Company provided the sparkle to this year’s dazzling Drink Magazine Bar Award (DMBA) ceremony at the Jing An Shangri-La, in west Shanghai.

Sober Company, Shanghai, scooped three awards, Restaurant Bar of the Year, Bar Team and Service, while Hope & Sesame, Guangzhou, claimed the coveted Bar of the Year award and best Cocktail Program in China. Jackie Lo was crowned China’s Bartender of the Year and, in doing so, became the first female to win the award.

Agung Prabowo reigned supreme in the two Asia categories, winning Bartender of the Year while also claiming the Bar of the Year title for The Old Man, in Hong Kong. In total, 21 winners were announced, with each one awarded either a silver or gold shaker.

Founded in 2016 by Thirsty Work Production, DMBA was created to celebrate the evolution of China’s bar industry, involving as many bar owners, bartenders and brand partners as could be squeezed into a five-star hotel ballroom. The aim was not just to celebrate but also to reach out to the region and the world to showcase just how fast the bar and restaurant trade in China has advanced.

DMBA 2018’s rhythm-themed ceremony paid tribute to the beating heart of the bar industry and the shared pulse that connects everyone all from soul to shaker, punctuated by an incredible opening percussion and dance performance. Six hundred guests from the industry and beyond toasted a successful evening with a cocktail reception before a gourmet dinner.
