Boxing Cat Brewery may be better known to its clientele for the meticulously crafted beers it serves but the establishment has also built up quite a reputation for its food fare among its ever-expanding patrons.

The three-floor space on Yongfu Road was given a new look recently — an industrial vibe with a warm color palette and subtle accents. And the use of fabrics adds a much more feminine touch to the rather masculine space as well.

Both the first and third floors feature an outdoor space to chill in the warmer months — perfect for beer drinkers.

The food menu retains its American themes, from house smoked BBQ ribs, southpaw sliders to chili cheese fries. And most of the big portioned food items are ideal for pairing with the house brewed beers.

Boxing Cat Ringside Red

I visited one breezy evening and found the outdoor seating more comfortable than before. Prior to trying out the house signature beer, I opted for a beertail (beer based cocktail). A glass of basil smash was a refreshing start, composed of basil-infused gin, freshly squeezed lemon juice, fresh bail with a Boxing Cat Brewery Right Hook Helles craft beer.

It was followed by six different craft beer samplers with a taste journey vying from refreshing to bold — a great choice for those new to understanding the versatility and complexity of craft beer.

Southpaw sliders

It’s recommended to taste all samplers before starting the food pairing. And for those wanting to know more, the menu indicates the characters, methods and a food pairing suggestion for each house selection.

I enjoyed the sucker punch pale ale for its tropical fruit notes of mango and guava, perfect for the season and also the well balanced standing 8 pilsner — a simple yet satisfying pils with a medium malt flavor and crisp and smooth finish.

Each pick from the six samplers has an amazing capacity to pair with different food.
