SLURP!, a cozy eatery on Maoming Road N. with only a few tables packed tightly on the second floor, is a go-to place for authentic Yunnan cuisine in Shanghai.

Yunnan is one of China’s most ethnically and geographically diverse provinces and it is known for its strong flavors and unique seasonings. In the hot summer, the spicy and sour flavors are ideal.

Unlike most Yunnan outlets in the city, Slurp! specializes in very local dishes and snacks — you won’t see the wowing steam pot chicken here, but an array of unique flavors like Kunming-style deep-fried potato and pan-fried rubing (a Yunnan cheese).

For appetizers, many diners order a deep-fried potato dish, either the old Kunming style or Yunnan street fries (both 25 yuan). The Kunming style is quite authentic with the addition of yuxingcao, or fish mint, which is considered online as one of the 10 most stinky foods.

The Dai-style chicken with lime and fresh chili (48 yuan), boneless chicken feet salad (38 yuan) and spicy green mango salad with shrimps (68 yuan) are also great dishes that can cheer up the appetite.

Grilled tilapia fish (58 yuan) is among the most popular main dishes at Slurp!. The fish, fresh and tender, was grilled with strong seasonings. The skin of the fish were crunchy, and they do a wonderful job to make a spicy and sour flavor infused in every bite of the fish.

The mixed mushrooms roasted in banana leaves (32 yuan), however, was mediocre in terms of ingredients and flavor, featuring mostly enoki mushroom. It was also too salty.

A great staple to complete the meal is a dish called “Save the King,” which is traditional Tengchong sliced rice cake fried with minced pork, egg, tomato, leek and pickles (38 yuan). The rice cakes had a perfect al dente texture, and the flavor was very well balanced with a hint of spice. The Kunming-style fried rice noodles known as ersi is another signature dish.

For dessert, the flower pastry with sugar rose filling is a must-try.

Daily from 4pm to 7pm, the happy hour at Slurp! has a good deal for alcoholic drinks, everything from house fruit wine to beer and cocktails are two for one.

Signature drinks here are the Dali plum wine, homemade sour papaya wine and strong Yunnan-style rice wine.
