With a licence for grilling, it has to be Barbarian
Barbarian has provided a nomadic, cave-like space for feast-type celebrations, and a passion for tribal cooking and mixology ever since it opened its doors in 2017.
At the corner of Wuding and Jiaozhou roads, the three-level restaurant is divided into alternative dining spaces to meet different requests. There’s either a more social space on the first floor, an intimate cave-like dining room on the second level or a terrace for outdoor drinking and dining on the third floor. And all spaces exude a different vibe for people to feel happy and relaxed.
Barbarian specializes in the tribal charcoal grilling of meat, yet its mixology team is equally as strong.
The mixology team customizes cocktails up to everyone’s taste and flavor. You choose a base spirit, a taste, from sweet to bitter, and a flavor, fruity, herbal to spicy and coffee. The bartender gets inspired by your combination choice and mixes homemade infusions and syrups, fresh fruits and herbs to make a surprise drink. The basic price of a cocktail is 65 yuan or more depending on your spirit choice.
The food menu favors meat and seafood kebabs. Barbarian offers a variety of unique flavors highlighted with smoked and charred deliciousness from the charcoal grills.
The chefs marinate and season the kebabs with house-made marinades and each variety has its own special taste. From the tangy and spicy beef kebabs, the Cuban mojo salmon kebabs, to the soy-ginger chicken and the Middle-Eastern spiced lamb koftas, Barbarian offers a myriad of global flavors to satisfy different tastes.
For two persons, it’s recommended to order the “Uncivilized Couples” (178 yuan) choice — a big plate of skewers, including beef kebab, chicken skewer, Xinjiang-style lamb skewer and an Argentina prawn skewer, served with garlic bread, grilled corn on the cob, baby potatoes and different sauces for pairing. I love to start my “meat” night here, with appetizers such as Spanish grilled cheese (sourdough, manchego cheese, chill-garlic butter), as a winter comfort food, and the crispy fishmonger composed of deep-fried seafood and mixed veggies with orange aioli. It was a nice match with their custom-made cocktails.
