Wrinkle removal therapy has never been more popular in the cosmetic surgery market, according to medical experts.

Wrinkle removal therapy has never been more popular in the cosmetic surgery market, according to medical experts.

They say there are several new treatments and products available on the market and widely accessible in the city’s medical centers, hospitals and beauty parlors, including dermal-filler injections, laser treatment and traditional Chinese medicine.

“A new therapy called Ultherapy, which is a kind of laser treatment using ultrasound energy to lift and tighten wrinkles on the face, is very popular,” said Dr Li Yufei from the plastic surgery department of No.455 Hospital of People’s Liberation Army.

“But it hasn’t received approval from the China Food and Drug Administration.

“This means currently it is an illegal therapy in the country.

“Another laser therapy called Picosure has received a license from the CFDA.

“But there is only one machine in the country, from the US-based Cynosure, which has received approval on Picosure.”

But Dr Li warned people against using unlicensed facility for wrinkle treatment.

“Don’t go to beauty parlors or any other unlicensed facilities. There is no medical safety guarantee,” Li said.

Wrinkles are related and influenced by several things such as age, time, pressure, lifestyle, exposure to ultraviolet rays and skin care habits.

“Improper skin care habits can also damage the skin,” said Dr Duan Yanjuan from Shanghai No.7 People’s Hospital.

“For better skin and less wrinkles, a healthy lifestyle is a key, so avoid smoking and drinking alcohol.

“If there are wrinkles, we suggest a combination for laser treatment and traditional Chinese treatment for better effects,” she said. “Radiofrequency treatment and acupuncture can tighten the skin effectively.”

Experts said both radiofrequency and acupuncture treatment must be carried out in a medical facility by professionals.

“Even though it is non-invasive therapy, it is important to visit a legal facility,” Dr Duan added.
