Doctors treat fetus with rare heart defect
XINHUA Hospital announced yesterday that its doctors successfully treated a 32-week fetus diagnosed with a rare life-threatening heart condition. Without this intervention, experts say the fetus would have died outside its mother’s womb.
The surgery was conducted on Tuesday and both the fetus and mother are said to be in stable condition.
The heart problem was detecting during a prenatal check. The defect developed into hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a rare condition where the left side of the heart is severely underdeveloped.
Doctors conducted a 30-minute operation to improve blood flow to the left side of the heart in order to support its development.
The operation was the first of its kind ever conducted by a single hospital in Asia, the hospital announced.
According to the president of Xinhua Hospital, Dr Sun Kun, surgeons there have been experimenting on intrauterine surgery using animal subjects for three years.
