Shanghai Popular Science Products Expo has had a record-breaking 2017.

The four-day event closed on Monday after attracting nearly 140,000 visitors this year and hit a record high.

The expo received more than 33,000 people on its opening day on Friday and numbers exceeded 50,000 on Saturday, Shanghai Association for Science and Technology said.

Due to the unexpected popularity, the organizers for the first time extended the exhibiting hours on Monday, the last day of the expo, from the scheduled 2pm to 4pm.

As it was also for the first time that the expo had been held during summer vacation, many more children attended this year.

“There are many exhibits of different areas, which expanded my horizon,” said Wang Dabao, a 12-year-old visitor. “I like the simulated cockpit of the C919 and a virtual reality machine that can spin you in any angle. It was simulating a roller coaster but more exciting.”

The expo featured more than 3,500 latest science products from over 350 tech and cultural companies, scientific institutes and universities. They came from 13 countries and regions.

The exhibitors registered 15.8 million yuan (US$2.38 million) in retail sales during the exhibition on site, and a further 132 million yuan of contracts of intention were signed.
