'Plane watching corridor' to be built near Hongqiao airport
Minhang District plans to build an “aircraft watching corridor” near Hongqiao airport by the end of the year for civil aviation enthusiasts to watch planes take off and land.
The corridor will be built along Xiaolaigang River, a once noxious waterway running through Minhang, Qingpu and Songjiang districts. It has been cleaned up under the city government’s waterways improvement plan.
Visitors will be able to walk along a plank path along the river to watch what's going on at Hongqiao International Airport, an official with Xinhong Subdistrict said.
The history of the airport and civil aviation knowledge will be introduced on boards to be erected along the corridor.
The subdistrict also plans to develop a water sports base for canoeing and dragon boat racing, the official said. The flood prevention wall along the river is being reinforced, and a 16-kilometer-long running path will be built along the riverside.
Cruise ship docks and sightseeing platforms have also been designed along the river.
