Guides are beloved by Chinese — or perhaps more accurately by Chinese parents — and they are especially popular as a new academic year unfolds. They are seen as an effective way to obtain good marks in a highly competitive environment. To reduce pressure on students, Shanghai Education Commission reiterated yesterday that schools must not set written exams for students in the first two weeks of term.
