Drunk driver dragged cop 300 meters
A drunk driver who dragged a policeman along for 300 meters after refusing to stop has been sentenced to five months in detention for dangerous driving and obstructing public service.
The man surnamed Xu attended an all-night drinking party with his friends on June 12 at a restaurant in Jing’an District. They left around 7am. Though drunk, Xu still drove, even taking two of his friends home, according to the district court.
Intoxicated, he couldn’t see traffic signs clearly and drove on the wrong direction on the Zhongshan Road N. He was stopped by a traffic police officer at the junction with Gonghexin Road.
The police officer signaled he wanted to check Xu’s driving license. Fearful of being punished for drunk driving, Xu sped up and tried to flee, at which point the police officer, with his hands stuck in a half-open window, was dragged along for about 300 meters away until another policeman saw what was happening and got Xu to stop.
At a nearby police station, a blood alcohol level of 1.439mg/ml, nearly twice the legal limit of alcohol, was detected in his blood.
