Authorities plan to introduce more brand breakfast eateries near Metro stations.

“We found that small breakfast eateries are popular among residents, and we have relaxed the requirement of their minimum space to 20 square meters instead of 50 square meters as in the past,” said Wu Xingbao, deputy director of Shanghai Commerce Commission.

“The practice aims to encourage big breakfast brands to open more small outlets at Metro stations to provide breakfasts to commuters,” he said.

So far, Babi Mantou, renowned for its steamed buns, has 130 outlets by Metro stations, while Yang’s Fried Dumplings, which sells shengjian, a pan-fried dumpling, has 75.

Dafugui restaurant, whose history dates to 1881, has 13, and Gll Wonton has about 30.

“They offer a rich variety of breakfast choices from steamed buns to noodles and youtiao (fried dough sticks) for commuters on their way rushing to work,” Wu said.

In addition, there are 697 licensed breakfast stalls in the city and most of them are at Metro stations, hospitals or residential complexes.

Between January and August, the city closed 90,000 illegal street stalls.
