Chung K. Law delivers his speech at the Soong Ching Ling School in Shanghai on September 25.

Chinese American Chung K. Law delivered a speech at the Soong Ching Ling School in Shanghai to inspire students to pursue "the light of wisdom" on Monday.

Law, a member of the American National Academy of Engineering Professor at Princeton University, and director of Tsinghua University’s center for combustion energy, started with the definition of combustion.

“Combustion is a driving force for technological and social development,” said Law, adding that it had started human civilization, helped human beings pursue wisdom and love, brought warmth and happiness, guided people into industrial civilization and expanded the scope of human activities.

Energy, environment, climate change, human health, fire and blast disasters, space exploration and the synthesis of new materials are all closely related to combustion.

The speech was part of the school’s cultural program series, Soong Ching Ling Forum.

“The program aims at building up a high land of thoughts and cultural community on campus with excellent international resources,” said Feng Lirong, principal of the school. “We invited a scientist to have face-to-face communication with our students today so as to provide them an opportunity to learn about scientific frontiers and inspire their interest in scientific research and study.”

The school will invite more scientists, cultural celebrities, industrial leaders and other elites into its campus to enable students to appreciate their charm with innovative spirit, humanistic thoughts and a sense of mission, according to Feng.

Former basketball player Yao Ming was the first speaker of the Soong Ching Ling Forum, where he shared his career and life experience with students in March.
