Shanghai's food watchdog said today it had ordered food delivery platform Meituan-Dianping to strengthen delivery management after a deliveryman was exposed to eat an ordered meal and spit it back.

The deliveryman wearing Meituan's uniform was seen opening the plastic bag of a meal he was delivering in an elevator at midnight on October 21, which was captured by the surveillance camera of the elevator. He had a few mouthfuls of the meal, but spit the food back to the meal box, and the whole process lasted for about one minute, the video showed.

He repackaged the food and walked out of the elevator to deliver it.

He was dismissed by the food delivery company after the video was uploaded online, causing a buzz among Netizens. It is unknown where the video was shot.

The Shanghai Food and Drug Administration also ordered the company to make a thorough investigation and raise awareness on food safety to prevent similar incident.
