Domestic garbage produced by restaurants and small businesses on about 2,000 streets in Shanghai will be collected directly by cleaners and sanitation trucks by the end of this year to improve the environment.

The roads chosen are small and medium sized, and have numerous eating places or wet markets that cause pollution, according to Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau.

The eateries and markets usually don’t have a fixed garbage dumping spot and the garbage bins often spill over, the bureau said, adding that disorderly parking is also a problem.

The eateries are required to pack their garbage themselves for cleaners to pick up during a daily collection.
